Generation Rent discussion forum Friday 20 March

I will be co-hosting an event with the Govan Law Centre on Friday 20 March from 2pm to 3pm at Hillhead Library, Byres Road, to promote the issues facing ‘Generation Rent’.

Since 2010, average weekly earnings have dropped dramatically for the under 30’s. 18-20 year olds have experienced a 10.3 per cent real terms drop in their weekly earnings and 22-29 year olds’ weekly income has suffered a similar 9.4 per cent fall.

Generation Rent is about the choice facing those who have been acutely affected by the cost of living crisis. It is about tackling income insecurity across the UK, and promoting decent, affordable, and secure housing for those who need it most.

For many in this generation renting is not an option but the only choice available. The failure of government to tackle rip-off rental markets is making this choice an increasingly unaffordable one as well.

I strongly believe that everyone deserves decent, affordable housing and that is why I have joined forces with my Scottish Labour parliamentary colleagues in pledging my support to reform the private rented sector.

Your views matter to me. I know your time is precious but it would be great if you could come along and share your views on how we can promote Generation Rent in our city and hear about some of the steps that are already being taken to support the campaign.
