Today finance secretary Derek Mackay suggested the SNP would introduce a 50p top rate of tax on the richest one per cent if the Tories did the same…
This was a weak performance from an SNP Finance Minister who is clearly out of his depth. Derek Mackay is either in denial about the impact of the SNP’s £327million cuts to local services like schools and care for the elderly, or he simply doesn’t care.
In 2015 the SNP backed a 50p top rate of tax on the richest 1 per cent, yet today Derek Mackay suggested he wouldn’t consider introducing this unless the Tory government does the same. People will be appalled that the SNP’s tax policy appears to be based on copying what the Tories do.
Labour will not vote for a budget that cuts £327million from local services like schools and care of the elderly. We will table amendments to stop the cuts and invest in our public services."
